Holyday: The Feast of the Theophany of Our Lord is a Holyday of Obligation in the Byzantine Ruthenian Metropolia of Pittsburgh. Great Vespers followed by the Sanctification of Jordan Water will be celebrated this evening at 6:00 PM (please note the time!). Tomorrow the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.

2014 In 2014 Pascha/Easter falls on April 20th. The Feast of the Encounter of Our Lord with Simeon (February 2nd) will coincide with the Sunday of Zacchaeus this year. The first All Souls Saturday falls on February 22nd. Cheesefare Sunday is March 2nd and thus the Great Fast begins on Monday, March 3rd€œ. The Feast of the Annunciation falls on Tuesday of the Fourth Week of the Great Fast. Mid-Pentecost is May 14th€˜ and the Feast of the Ascension is May 29th. Pentecost Sunday is June 8th€˜ and the Apostles Fast runs from June 16th to 28th. The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross falls on a Sunday (September 14th). The Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord / Christmas is on a Thursday.

Fast/Abstinence: Most Fridays throughout the year are designated as days of penance — abstinence from meat or an equivalent penance. Among the exemptions is the week following the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee (this year, the week of February 9th€˜). We are dispensed from fasting during that week in order to avoid the kind of hypocritical and proud fast of the Pharisee who vainly praised himself for fasting twice a week.

All Souls Saturdays:

  • The first of the 5 Memorial Saturdays dedicated to prayer for the Faithful Departed does not occur this year until February 22nd. Please note on the “All Souls”€ envelopes any additions or corrections to your list of departed family members.
  • If you have not done so in the past but wish to include your departed family members in the Diptychs/Hramoty, simply list your own family name and the first names of your deceased family members [for example, SMITH FAMILY: John, Mary, Joseph, Anna, George, etc.]. You may list the names on the All Souls envelopes or place the list inside the envelope.
  • All new submissions, additions, and corrections should be sent in by Sunday, February 16th, in order to be printed in this year’s Hramoty.
