Bulletin March 5, 2017

Altar Candles: The altar candles are burning during the month of March for: Michael, Martha, Kevin, & Gregory Krofchik.

Let Us Remember in Prayer: Those who are ill or convalescing. May our Lord Jesus Christ, the Physician and Healer of souls and bodies, grant them peace and good health for many blessed years.
Please let Fr. Lewis know if anyone should be added or taken away from this prayer list.

The Mystery of Repentance and the Confessional: This Sacrament or Mystery offers us healing through the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. There are “cheat sheets” available so please don’t be frightened of forgetting what to say or how to proceed if it has been a long time since the previous confession. But over time we can forget what a sin is or we may have never known, so examination of conscious pamphlets are available for reading.

The Early Church: From the Resurrection of Christ to Catholicism, Adult Education Class: Father Lewis is very happy that the classes enjoyed much success. There were 32 different people in all who attended at least one class. Of those 32, 4 were non-parishioners, and 1 was a Protestant. There seems to be further interest in new classes or different topics so we may begin something new in the coming weeks.

All Souls Saturdays: The Hramoty or Dyptichs is now available for review. If any changes need to be made, please submit them by Wednesday March 8.

Pysanki Workshop: On Sunday March 26th, Saint Gregory’s will host a parish pysanki-dyeing workshop. Please join us in continuing this ancient tradition. All are welcome, and supplies will be provided, but please RSVP by signing up in the Social Hall by March 21st.

A Good Bibliography for the Great Fast: These spiritual classics of the Eastern Tradition are perfect reading for spiritual reflection and growth in virtue during the Great Fast.
The Way of a Pilgrim, Translated by Helen Bacovcin, Doubleday: The Way of a Pilgrim is a novel about a 19th C Russian pilgrim who searches for union with Christ by seeking how to pray constantly as Saint Paul suggests in 1Thesalonians to “pray constantly” This is an easy read for all ages about learning to pray the Jesus Prayer ceaselessly within our heart.
The Desert Fathers: Sayings of the Early Christian Monks, Penguin Classics: This particular compendium has the sayings categorized by virtue or vice for easy reference on spiritual topics. This is a must have for every Christian home.
The Ladder of Divine Ascent, Saint John Climacus. This is the ultimate guide to the spiritual life composed of 30 rungs or steps one must take to reach perfection, or deification. Each of us will barely be able to fully complete the first step, but it’s spiritual guidance for the Eastern Christian is second only to Sacred Scripture.
The Philokalia Vol. I-IV, Faber and Faber. This compilation is concerned with both the theological and spiritual sides of the spiritual life with such authors as: St. Maximos the Confessor, Evagrios the Solitary St. Symeon the New Theologian, St. Gregory Palamas, among many others. The Philokalia is the text that the hero of The Way of a Pilgrim refers to when he has finally found a worthy instructor in his new life of constant prayer.
The Holy Bible: Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition, Ignatius Press. The cornerstone of our spiritual life is always Sacred Scripture. The Book of John is read in the Byzantine Church during the Great Fast and has a theological view of Jesus Christ that is different than the other Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. This is the version of the Bible we now have in our pews.
